Polymer electrolyte fuel cells employ an ion-exchange membrane to generate electricity from the chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. Membrane-electrode assembly (MEA) is made up of ion-exchange membranes with electrocatalysts on both sides. These assemblies are sandwiched between separators and layered on top of each other to form a stack, which is connected to peripheral devices that supply hydrogen and oxygen (air).
